TRAINING TIPS

Preparation:
1. Shoes are half (maybe more than half) the training experience. You need good supportive shoes that fit your own unique gate and walking/running style. If you can't get new shoes to start, I strongly encourage you to start saving now. You will need them before we get into the higher mileage so you can break them in. The best place to go, and this is a personal preference, is the Portland Running Company in West Linn. The staff there will watch you walk or run and fit the shoe to you. They also have a great return policy if the shoe just doesn't work out. I had to try several brands until I found that "sweet" fit.

2. Proper weather gear will also make or break the training experience. We will be starting in February- no Oregon's warmest month. In order to ensure showing up Sat. after Sat. it will be important to be comfortable. A light weight running jacket- NO COTTON!, something a little warmer for walkers like a light fleece with a protective rain layer perhaps, some cheap leggings (I got one of my pairs at Target for $6.00), gloves (those little, stretch $1.50 ones work great), and something to cover your ears.

3. Hydration: I will say this over and over again. Proper hydration is essential. Look into a belt system so you can carry water with you. When we get to where we are out there for longer than an hour, you will need to carry water. They recommend a swallow or so every 5-10 minutes depending on exertion level. But notice, at a minimum- every 10 minutes. I will talk about sports drinks a bit later, we don't need to worry about that yet.

4. A few words about weight loss: Although this training will be an excellent tool for a weight loss program, it is important to understand that as the miles go up your body needs to refuel. Do not skip meals or you will dispose yourself to injury and fatigue. I will provide more specific fueling guidelines as needed. For now just understand you are entering into a training program, you have to think like an athlete to perform like an athlete. And... you will feel better. :)

5. Just show up! Showing up is usually the hardest part, once you have done that the rest is a easy. Bring your friends, (they can help with accountability and motivation) make it fun. We are excited to embark on this journey with you!
